by Suzi Fraser
04/08/2005

 Gary Karr

The Oceanic Institute, Waimanalo, Hawai‘i, has announced the promotion of Mr. Gary Karr to Director of Communications and Education, reporting directly to Oceanic Institute President, Dr. Bruce Anderson. Karr was previously the Education Training and Communications Manager at OI.

“We are thrilled Mr. Karr has accepted this challenging new position,” said Dr. Anderson. “With expanding education and training opportunities resulting from our recent affiliation with HPU, the responsibilities of this position will be increasing dramatically. Gary’s dedication and talent are tremendous assets to our organization.”

Karr has worked for Oceanic Institute for 25 years in a variety of positions. Most recently, he has developed and managed training and educational programs in aquaculture and marine science for students, teachers and government officials.

Karr was previously a member of the Governor’s Task Force on Moloka‘i Fishpond Restoration and a panel member on the Maui Economics Development Board.  Karr will continue to serve as a liaison with the Oceanic Institute’s affiliate, Hawai‘i Pacific University, working on joint education activities and other opportunities of cooperation.

Oceanic Institute is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to research, development and transfer of oceanographic, marine environmental, and aquaculture technologies. The largest marine aquaculture research institution in the U.S., Oceanic Institute is a world leader in conducting applied research in aquaculture production and marine resource conservation.

Oceanic Institute is an affiliate of Hawaii Pacific University, the state’s largest private University. The affiliation of these two great institutions offers faculty and students excellent learning and research opportunities.
