The fifth edition of the international conference on seaweed ‘Seagriculture’ takes place in Aveiro, Portugal on September 27-28.  The conference will feature 19 speakers, 8 trade show participants, over 50 participating institutions and 11 poster presentations.

From seaweed biology and strain selection, to bioplastics made from seaweed: Seagriculture 2016 covers the complete value chain of seaweed. In session 1, Juan Luis Gomez Pinchetti discusses strain selection for algal pigment applications in food, cosmetics and textiles for instance; in Session 2, Maud Benoit will make sure that we do not forget about (food) standards and regulation in our enthusiasm of the many applications of seaweed. The succesful seaweed farm is the overarching theme of session 3, where Olavur Gregersen discusses upscaling, a relevent theme for all agricultural holdings. With upscaling comes mechanization, IHC’s Bernardete Castro will let us in on the initial results of mechanised harvesting trials (harvesting time reduction of 90%!).

Session 5: Seaweed for high-end purposes kicks off with Balakrishnan Prithiviraj who’ll discuss the effect of C crispus fractions on the development of Alzheimer’s disease. With Session 6, we move the discussion to feed and carrageenan production, with contributions of Cargill’s Jacques Mazoyer, and intermediate results of the ZEEVIVO project – a project that ultimately hopes to eradicate fish meal.
