MEXICO - Fish feed formulas becoming increasingly specialized
by Aquafeed.com Staff
As the price of fish feed continues to increase, companies will need to work to make its use more efficient by creating more precise feed formulas to reduce waste.
Generally fish feed formulas have been modified according to species or age, but several speakers at this year's Offshore Mariculture Conference in Ensenada, Mexico said formulas need to take other factors into account as well.
Albert Tacon of Aquatic Farms pointed out that fish feed prices, which can make up about 60% of the cost to raise fish, have continued to increase significantly, a trend which will not likely change.
“prices of ingredients are never going to go down, they re always going to go up,” he said.
Adel El-Mowafi, technology application director at Cargill, said that currently salmon feed companies are making a profit of about $4 to $5 per kilo.
Both El-Mowafi and Iannis Karacostas, product manager of marine species, at BioMar said that farmers will need to be using more accurate feeds, meaning they will need to be modified not only to species and age, but depending on time of year the fish is being harvested, location, etc.
