What price cheaper feeds?
10/26/2005
Feed constitutes the major cost in (semi) intensive farming and is therefore a traditional target of cost cutting strategies. However, cheaper feeds, obtained by eliminating the most expensive ingredients in the formulation, do not always result in improved cost-efficiency. More

RESEARCH

Basic Energy Balance Studies for Catfish Fed Soybean Meal
A study was reported by Chinese scientists that calculated the affect of feeding soybean meal on the energy balance of catfish. Catfish were fed diets where fish meal protein was replaced (0, 13, 26, 39, 52 and 65%) with soybean meal with and without methionine supplementation. The researchers showed that feeding increasing amounts of soybean resulted in increased feed energy lost in feces, excretion and metabolism that decreased the amount of energy available for growth. Supplementing with methionine to produce a better amino acid profile resulted in improved utilization of soy protein at high feeding levels and less energy used for metabolism, or lost in excretion, and more energy available for growth. (Comment: It would be interesting to know the quality characteristics of the soybean meal used in these studies and whether similar results could be obtained using practical pond environments).
