Chinese BioMar JV inaugurates new production line and warehouse
The Joint-Venture between the Danish BioMar Group and the Chinese Tongwei Group took another important step with the inauguration of a new production line for extruded feed and a new warehouse at the Haiwei plant in Southern China. "The new extruder line is part of an upgrade of the factory where we have replaced older equipment with more efficient technology. Together with our Chinese partner Tongwei we want to continue the growth of Haiwei and that requires a series of upgrades and also a new large warehouse. Altogether it will make us more flexible towards the customers and allow for continued growth."
MicroSynbiotiX wins Nutreco Feed Tech Challenge
Start-up company MicroSynbiotiX has won the final of the Nutreco Feed Tech Challenge Event. The event took place on February 22 and 23 and consisted of several challenge rounds during which 10 contestants competed. According to the jury report, the innovation of MicroSynbiotiX had the best fit with the challenge profile: a real game changer with high potential, operating in an area where few other companies are active. MicroSynbiotiX has developed a novel method of producing oral vaccines to combat diseases and infections in aquaculture.
New report finds farmed salmon has lower environmental cost than other proteins
A detailed assessment of consumers’ most common protein choices shows salmon raised in the ocean have the lowest overall cost to the environment. A new study prepared for the BC Salmon Farmers Association by Ottawa based RIAS Inc. examines the evidence from life-cycle analyses in the literature on the environmental footprint of BC farm-raised salmon compared to production of other food proteins. The most common indicators in an ISO standardized method for measuring a “cradle-to-farm gate” approach across the animal or crop’s life are: energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, eutrophication potential, water use and land use.
AFIA statement regarding U.S. Department of Commerce Sec. Wilbur Ross
The American Feed Industry Association has released a statement on the appointment of Department of Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross. "It is important for Sec. Ross to understand how international markets are key for continued development and success of the U.S. feed industry. The agriculture industry, specifically the animal food sector, must be a priority when determining administrative trade policy. If not, our ability to advance will be diminished."
Public consultation on the ASC-MSC Seaweed Standard now open
With global seaweed production increasing alongside demand for certification, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) have been developing a joint standard for certifying global seaweed operations. Industry stakeholders are invited to view the proposed ASC-MSC Seaweed Standard and share expertise and feedback through an online consultation, which is open for 60 days.
AUSTRALIA - Yumbah to produce own feed
Yumbah Aquaculture has become the only Australian abalone farm to produce and control the supply of its own feed after it bought South Australian based feed manufacturer, EP Aquafeeds. Under the terms of the acquisition the business will become Yumbah Aquafeeds.
US - Grain traders prepping fish oil substitutes for aquaculture, health fads
The world's top agricultural traders and biotechnology firms are finding novel ways to make fish oil substitutes from grains and algae as they seek to cash in on consumer health fads that have led to a scarcity of the fatty acids commonly found in fish. "We have finite fish oil, growing aquaculture and a world that needs more Omega-3s. They're going to have to come from somewhere else."
CHINA - Investor launches new fund for aquaculture feed technology
Aquaculture investor David Tze has launched the Search Fund for an Alternative Aquafeed Technology, which is focused on aquaculture feed technology. Tze’s new search fund, announced during the "F3 Fish-Free Feed Challenge" meeting in the San Francisco Bay Area in January, will focus on innovation in the aquafeed ingredients sub-sector, seeking a single aquaculture technology to acquire, operate, and grow.

Skretting champions collaboration at Animal Health Investment Europe
On Thursday February 23, Animal Health Investment Europe hosted a top-level panel discussion on Innovation and Sustainability in Aquaculture, gathering leaders from across the aquaculture industry. Skretting emphasized the critical need for increased innovation that supports aquatic and terrestrial animal health and biosecurity. "Innovation should focus on preventative solutions. For both aquaculture and livestock production there is much more for us to learn and develop within selective breeding for more robust animals, development of efficient vaccines and also functional, targeted feeds. However, what is clear is that these solutions must be applied in a holistic approach, as none of them are going to solve specific health challenges alone.”

1140 agribusiness professionals from across the globe provided their views on the use of phytogenic feed additives (PFAs, or botanicals) as part of the 2017 Biomin Phytogenic Feed Additives Survey.
