AFIA WEBCAST: What you need to know about the Food Safety Modernization Act, Tuesday, April 5, 2011  2 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. EDT

The American Feed Industry Association is holding a webcast on the feed aspects of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Tuesday, April 5, from 2:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. EDT.

The webcast, which will provide an overview of the Act’s feed components, will feature AFIA vice president Richard Sellers, legal counsel Bob Hahn and FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine surveillance and compliance director, Dr. Dan McChesney.

There is no doubt that this new law signed on Jan. 4, 2011 has dramatically changed the regulation of feed for many years to come. FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg described the law as a “sea change” in the way the U.S. regulates food and feed. President Obama’s FY 2012 budget requested over $300 million to begin the implementation. However, it remains to be seen what level Congress will fund these efforts, but FDA’s efforts to implement the law have already begun.

As a feed, pet food or ingredient manufacturer, what does this new law mean to your business? It means there are many new provisions, some of which you may not be aware, and new powers granted to FDA that companies need to know about. This webcast will discuss many of these matters as well as address some of the most frequently asked questions regarding the FSMA, such as:

•         Is my firm considered high-risk or low-risk?

•         What should I tell my foreign suppliers to ensure they comply with the FSMA?

•         When is FDA going to start collecting user fees for re-inspections? How will the costs be determined?

•         What will FDA do if Congress does not appropriate adequate funding for the implementation of FSMA?

•         What are the timelines for implementation of the new provisions?
