Fisheries and aquaculture in the U.S.

In this new EUMOFA issue in addition to prices, fisheries and aquaculture in the U.S. are examined. The U.S. is one of the largest fisheries nations. In 2016, the seafood industry supported 1,7 million jobs and contributed $212 billion in sales.

  •  Fisheries and aquaculture. In 2017, USA fishermen landed 4,5 million tons of fish and shellfish. Alaska pollock prevails with a catch over 1,5 million tons in 2017, while channel catfish and shellfish are the main farmed species.
  • Trade with the EU. With 308.000 tons, the EU was the second largest destination of US exports of fisheries and aquaculture products in 2018, mainly consisting of Alaska pollock, salmon and hake. On the other hand, from 2016 to 2018, EU exports to the US rose by 30% in volume and by 27% in value, reaching 96.000 tons worth €635 million.
  • Consumption. The estimated consumption of fish and shellfish per capita in the US in 2017 was 7,2 kg of edible meat, which was 0,50 kg more compared with 2016.
