In the April issue of the EUMOFA Monthly Highlights, two case studies are presented, aquaculture in Turkey and the shrimp market in the EU.

Aquaculture production in Turkey

Aquaculture production in Tukey has increased steadily during the past years and is about to surpass fisheries, a development mainly related to technological advances and government support. Turkey is the leading producer in the Mediterranean region for species such as trout, European seabass and gilthead seabream produced in the Mediterranean and Back Sea.

Shrimp market in the EU

The report also presents a case study about shrimp, the most produced, traded and consumed species in the world and in the EU. From the early 2000s, Asian countries have started progressively developing P. vannamei production instead of P. monodon.

In 2017, China was the leading producer of farmed P. vannamei providing 38% of the global total followed by India (13%), Indonesia (11%), Vietnam (10%) and Ecuador (10%).
