INGREDIENTS & COMMODITIES

Fishing in the south of Peru is still at a level higher than most experts forecasted. There was some good news about a possible El Nino in March.
Fishmeal prizes per m/t FOB vessel Peru port ranged from US$ 1,220 for 65/66% protein to US$ 1,520 for 68% protein, 500 hist, 120 TVN.
In northern Europe, Pelagia, TripleNine and Norsildmel have ended their joint fishmeal sales cooperation. Norsildmel had been marketing all the fishmeal for all three companies. The three companies will move ahead with their own marketing/sales operations.

European fishmeal prices are in the range of US$ 1,475 – 1,765. Read more at Hammersmith Marketing on our Fishmeal page.

The rise of aquaculture by-products: Increasing food production, value, and sustainability through strategic utilization
Since 2000, the use of wild fish inputs in the production of farm raised fish outputs, also known as the Fish In:Fish Out (FI:FO) ratio, has been a primary concern of the sustainability dialogue surrounding aquaculture production. Far less attention has been placed on the sustainability of downstream processing, including how by-products are managed. This paper contributes new information on the current utilization of aquaculture by-products in a case study on the Scottish Atlantic salmon industry. The findings show that there is considerable potential to increase the sustainability of the industry through maximizing human edible yield by strategically managing by-products. Supporting the movement towards the full utilization of by-products, this paper goes a step further by emphasizing the need to maximize their use in human consumption and select animal feeds, highlighting the economic, food security, and environmental benefits of doing so. Through exploratory scenarios based on the case study, the paper identifies that Scotland could increase food production from fish farming by over 60%, increase by-product revenue by 803%, and increase the industry bottom-line by over 5%, all without having to put any new cages in the water, or use any more marine resources. As the aquaculture industry moves into a new era of production and processing, where a diverse range of products can be produced from a single species, sustainability will be sought throughout the value chain. It is hoped that the ideas raised within this paper will encourage further discussion and collaboration on this topic going forward.

Fish oil by poultry fat in diets for European seabass juveniles
Rendered fats can be sustainable alternatives to fish oil due to their lower price and wider availability. This study evaluates the effects of replacing fish oil by increasing levels of poultry fat on the nutrient utilization, growth performance, tissue composition and lipid metabolism of European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) juveniles.
Homogeneous groups of 20 fish (19.1 ± 2.6 g) were subjected to a 12-h light/12-h dark photoperiod regime and kept in a recirculating saltwater system (salinity 35‰, 21 ± 1 °C) for 16 weeks. Triplicate groups of fish were fed a commercial-based diet as control (FO) and four isonitrogenous experimental diets, with 25, 50, 75 and 100% fish oil replacement. Soy lecithin was also tested in the diet with 100% poultry fat as an emulsifier agent.
The inclusion of poultry fat did not affect nutrient\'s digestibility nor plasma metabolites at 24 h post-feeding. Final body weight (62–67 g), feed intake, feed conversion ratio, protein efficiency ratio and whole-body composition were similar among experimental diets. Selected lipogenic enzymes\' activities were similar among FO and protein fats diets.
The fatty acids profile of muscle, liver and heart reflected the dietary lipid source, decreasing PUFA and increasing MUFA contents with poultry fat inclusion. Fish fed 25% and 50% of poultry fat were still able to provide the EPA and DHA muscle levels recommended for human consumption, but 100% resulted in increased liver lipid accumulation and reduced muscle omega-3 levels. Including soy lecithin could significantly attenuate liver lipid content in fish fed poultry fat-based diets.
