Russian salmon and trout production increased by 57%, from 49,200 tons to 77,000 tons, in the first half of 2021. Atlantic salmon production increased 4.8 times, to 14,300 tons, and trout production increased by 36%, to 62,700 tons.

Salmon and trout farming is one of the main projects of the strategy of the Russian Federation for the development of the aquaculture industry in the country. The program involves the development of two areas of fish farming and growing salmon RAS facilities.

“Salmon farming is the most promising area of commercial aquaculture. Over the past seven years, the volume of salmon production has almost tripled to 116,000 tons in 2020. This is approximately the same volume that we imported from Norway before the imposition of the sanctions when the restriction was about 120,000 tons of salmon. A further increase in the production volume requires the development of our own production of high-quality fish seed and fish feed. We plan to create breeding centers and feed mills,” said the head of the Federal Agency for Fishery, Ilya Shestakov.
