Alltech Symposium Focuses on Bouncing Back in 2010 - Kentucky, USA, May 16-19, 2010

After a global crisis of historical proportions, agriculture must bounce back in 2010.  In order to bounce back, businesses must focus on people, profits, and planet, the core determinants of today’s business success.  This ‘triple bottom line’ will assume center stage at Alltech’s 26th International Animal Health and Nutrition Symposium taking place in Kentucky, USA from May 16-19, 2010. The event, coinciding with Alltech’s 30th anniversary, promises to deliver a program like no other, providing ideas and tools to agribusiness to help determine where to best invest resources for maximum return and future sustainability.

In a year when much of the world has been impacted by the economic downturn, Alltech used 2009 to focus on a number of key issues critical to the success of a business. Building on the company’s previous symposia, the 2010 Symposium, ‘The Triple Bottom Line: People, Profits, and Planet’ will drill down to the basic factors that are crucial to a company’s survival. Delegates at the 2010 Alltech Symposium will explore and discuss sustainable corporate strategy platforms and frameworks for the agriculture industry such as the importance of branding our companies and branding our industry.

As the industry bounces back, it is also important to look at lessons learned from recent crises. One such crisis, from which the Irish pig industry is still rebounding, is the dioxin crisis of 2008. Alltech is therefore delighted to welcome Professor Patrick Wall, chairman of the inter-agency review of the crisis, to attend this year’s Symposium. Professor Wall will discuss the subject of traceability and the Irish dioxin crisis.

Alltech’s President, Dr. Pearse Lyons explained, “In today’s world profits are more critical than ever. Companies cannot forget, however, that their people and customers and the sustainability of the environment in which they operate, have also become critical to long-term survival. This Symposium marks our 30 year celebration making it a particularly significant event. It will also be a celebratory year for our industry as we bounce back from a year of adversity and look to future opportunities.”

The meeting will consist of general plenary sessions, along with breakout sessions focusing on dairy, beef, pig, poultry, equine, aquaculture, and regulatory issues. There will also be a roundtable discussion on companion animals. Key areas such as cell genomics, Alzheimer’s, traceability, carbon sequestering of greenhouse gases and agriculture of the future will be explored.

The plenary sessions will bring together an exciting range of speakers including, former Kentucky Governor and creator of the Kentucky Fried Chicken superbrand, John Y. Brown, Nan Dirk Mulder of Rabobank International and Professor Ray Smith, University of Kentucky. The dairy, beef, pig, poultry, equine, aquaculture and regulatory sessions will focus on how specific industries and sectors can bounce back through innovation and new technologies. The prestigious Medal of Excellence and Alltech Young Scientist Awards will also be presented during the Symposium.
