The Institute of Animal Resources, Kangwon National University, Chuncheon, Korea will host the international symposium on the Development of Sustainable production of Land and Water Animals and Feed Industry of Asian countries on September 28, 2011.

The Korean formula feed industry reached a record production of 17.5 million metric tons of compound feeds in 2010. However, the recent outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) has caused  tremendous damage and immense economical losses to all the Korean animal industries. Unfortunately, it is presumed that the impact of FMD would likely to prevail for a protracted period.  Furthermore, the Korean feed industry also is now confronted with other challenges. The cost of feed ingredients is predicted to increase further due to current global circumstances including a surge in oil price, poor production of cereal feedstuffs aggravated by climate change, continuous use of grains for biofuel production and increase in the demand of animal products in China.

It is evident that the animal and feed production industry will likely face more difficulties in the years to come. With a focus on this point of view, this symposium is intended to discuss the present status and perspective of both land and water animal production of the Asian countries, to examine various problems which hamper the industry’s growth and finally to search the right direction for the continuous development of the animal industry.
