To strengthen the efficiency and sustainability of Ecuador’s shrimp industry, the Sustainable Shrimp Partnership (SSP) and the National Chamber of Aquaculture (CNA) held a new edition of the SustainED program, focused on nutritional innovation as a key resource to raise shrimp farming standards.
SustainED is an educational program led by SSP and CNA that promotes the sustainable development of Ecuador’s shrimp industry. This edition, titled Nutritional Innovation: How to Maximize Feed Efficiency at Every Stage of Shrimp Farming, took place on May 22 at the Hilton Colón Hotel in Guayaquil, Ecuador, bringing together over 150 experts, academics, and industry leaders.
Throughout the event, participants shared strategies, technological advancements, and practical case studies that demonstrated how optimized nutrition can improve operational efficiency, reduce production costs, and enhance the environmental performance of shrimp farming.
"Feed is one of the main factors determining the environmental impact of shrimp farming. But it is also an area where real solutions already exist that can make a significant difference," said Pamela Nath, director of the Sustainable Shrimp Partnership (SSP). "At SSP, we work to highlight those solutions and make them accessible to those who want to take the next step.”
Similarly, José Antonio Camposano, executive president of the CNA, stated that "SustainED represents a key platform for strengthening the shrimp sector by bringing together producers, technicians, and leaders from across the value chain around a shared goal. These types of spaces allow us to increase access to knowledge and promote a shared vision of sustainability, understanding that by raising farming standards, we are also increasing the value and competitiveness of the entire industry."
The event's agenda included six technical sessions that provided a comprehensive perspective on the benefits of proper nutrition at each stage of the farming cycle. Topics covered included fundamentals of nutrition, responsible feed formulations, feeding technologies, new ingredient sources, larval nutrition, and regulatory frameworks for input usage. The presentations were delivered by national and international experts, with representation from leading companies such as Inve Aquaculture, Skretting, Vitapro, among others.
This edition of SustainED was made possible thanks to the support of Cargill, Vitapro, and TerraMar Latam, who joined SSP and CNA in building a sustainable future for aquaculture. Their backing, along with the ongoing commitment of SSP’s founding and associate members, reinforces the importance of working together to drive tangible improvements in the sector.
