Webcast Scheduled on European Union Animal By-Products
The American Feed Industry Association, in conjunction with the National Renderers Association and Pet Food Institute, have been working with Dr. Joyce Bowling and her team at USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service on European Union-approval issues. The EU poses some of the highest regulatory standards in the world for imports of animal by-products. Firms must be able to demonstrate compliance with Regulation (EC) 1774/2002, which pertains to health rules concerning animal by-products not intended for human consumption. U.S.-based exporters to the EU must be prepared to share raw-material supplier letters with APHIS prior to gaining approval to export to the EU.
AFIA, NRA and PFI are pleased to be offering a webcast, scheduled for July 1, 2009, (previously to be held June 18, 2009) regarding EU-supplier letters specifically. The webcast, “European Union Animal By-Products” specifically will cover the “Guidance for Facilities Receiving Category 3 Materials from FSIS or State Government Inspected Suppliers.”
The information provided in the webcast will aid animal by-product users who wish to export to the EU by educating them on the necessary documentation for supplier certification. For raw animal suppliers, the webcast will offer an opportunity to better understand what is needed for this validation and enable you to generate acceptable documentation for this requirement.
Additionally, APHIS will provide the most recent update on EU legislation affecting Regulation (EC) 1774/2004, as it is possible some post-mortem inspection requirements may change. Thus, APHIS officials will provide an update on how the agency might proceed with EU certification for firms exporting animal by-products to the EU.
The webcast is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Saving Time; the event will conclude at 3 p.m. The “early-bird” rate is $239 for AFIA and event partner members and $289 for non-members who register before June 17. The rates will be $269 and $319, respectively, for individuals who register after this date. To take advantage of this webcast and the early-bird registration rate, register online or by PDF.
We strongly encourage members exporting to the EU to share this opportunity with your animal by-product suppliers. The webcast will offer raw material suppliers an opportunity to work with the agency through the anonymous question-and-answer system designed via the webcast format.
