Farm in a Box, an Amsterdam-based startup, has received EUR 350,000 in funding from the North Holland Innovation Fund. The company is developing a modular, prefabricated solution for Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), making sustainable and efficient fish farming more accessible worldwide.
The design of Farm in a Box's RAS system has undergone a radical revision, incorporating prefabricated, modular components that can be easily assembled on-site. This allows Farm in a Box to enable farmers worldwide to quickly and affordably set up fish production, step by step, unit by unit. All this without the need to design expensive and complex installations, as is often the case today.
With funding from the North Holland Innovation Fund, Farm in a Box is developing a working prototype (MVP) of its integrated RAS control system. The company is also preparing the construction and commissioning of a demonstration unit to support further commercialization.
Farm in a Box was founded by Ohad Maiman (founder/former CEO of The Kingfish Company) and Thue Holm (founder/former CTO of Atlantic Sapphire) to address the high costs and long construction times that currently hinder the growth of the land-based aquaculture industry.
After building two leading companies in the sector, Ohad and Thue came together to consider how to overhaul the design and construction methods that make current solutions expensive and complex. This led to the groundbreaking development of a system that can be shipped worldwide and assembled on-site at significantly lower cost and with shorter construction times than existing systems.
Ohad Maiman, co-founder and CEO of Farm in a Box, said, “We are grateful for the support and trust of the North Holland Innovation Fund. Thanks to their funding, we can take the next step in our development and make significant progress on our operating system and patent applications.”
Thue Holm, co-founder and CTO at Farm in a Box, said that “having built some of the largest systems in the land-based sector, we know the challenges firsthand. We are excited to solve these bottlenecks with our innovative modular and prefabricated solution.”
