Evonik developing amino acids to turn salmon and shrimp into vegetarians

In addition to successful products for salmon, Evonik researchers have developed an improved source of methionine that shrimp can consume and metabolize at the right time and in the right amount. “This would mean it would be possible to entirely eliminate the use of marine resources like fishmeal and fish oil in the production of feed.”

The new aquafeed mill will produce 170,000 tons of feed a year. High technology is going to play a central role and with the current trend for sustainability and organic food, the feedmill will meet many different demands. Planning permission is expected later this year and commercial production will start in summer 2018.
BioMar reports successful test run of feed production in Turkey

The BioMar-Sagun fish feed factory in Turkey has successfully run its first test production. \"We expect start-up tests of the Söke factory to run until mid-July and will then then supply locally produced grower feeds for trout, sea bass and sea bream to our customers.\"

FEFAC-FEFANA conference puts animal nutrition on the EU agenda

In the context of the feed sector’s political and economic framework, the event showcased a series of solutions that animal nutrition can provide. The program featured European Commission officials, feed industry representatives and speakers from the farming sector, academia and the banking sector.

Open letter to president of European Commission regarding pending GM soybeans

An open letter has recently gone out from FEFAC, COCERAL & FEDIOL regarding the three pending GM soybeans, as the organizations fear severe trade disruptions could happen if no action is taken before the summer break. US Soybean associations released a similar call for action last week.
New European Market Advisory Council for fisheries and aquaculture holds first General Assembly

The Advisory Council brings together primary producers, representatives from industry and trade, environmental and consumer organizations to look at key issues affecting the sector and to deliver advice on markets. It will focus in particular on policy implementation and delivery of the Common Market Organisation (CMO), supply, regulatory and consumer affairs. Recommendations on these issues will be submitted to the EU institutions on behalf of the whole value chain.
Chilean government-funded project will work with industry partners to investigate impact of sea lice on salmon aquaculture

The two-year project will bring together experts across biotechnology, microbiology, immunology and pathology to study the effect lice have upon the salmon’s skin and gut defenses, the way lice hamper physiological processes, and their ability to withstand other infections. “This basic work is absolutely necessary to develop an efficient nutritional strategy to mitigate the impact of sea lice.”
Global Salmon Initiative and partners issue transparency challenge to global food sector

During the EAT Stockholm Food Forum, the Global Salmon Initiative (GSI), World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and The Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH) announced a challenge to other members of the global food sector to join them in increasing transparency, as part of a drive to accelerate improvements in industry sustainability and future food security. \'Transparency is not only a means to be open and accountable to your consumers, it is an essential component in building and maintaining trust with your customers - especially when it comes to concerns over food safety or sustainability issues.”
Gabriel García appointed as CEO of Nutreco Iberia

Nutreco has appointed Gabriel García as the new CEO of its business unit Nutreco Iberia. He takes over this position from Javier Rodríguez, who passed away last week. García currently leads Skretting Chile, one of Nutreco\'s largest operating companies, and will take up his new position as of September 1, 2016.

PERU - Bad anchovy catches raise fishmeal prices

The prices of super prime fishmeal have reached USD 2,000 / Mt FOB, while the industry expects the first data from the second scientific research conducted by IMARPE. The lack of information on resources and poor catches reported by the main producers are creating a lot of nervousness and confusion among fishmeal operators internationally. The key to the industry will be to know the amount of biomass in the Sea.
EU and Oxfam support shrimp value chain development for sustainable economic prosperity in Vietnam

Cargill\'s EWOS brand continues to make measurable progress in its key sustainability indicators, including reduced marine dependence and increased use of fish trimmings. In 2015, 32 percent of the marine ingredients used in EWOS feeds were from fish trimmings --an increase of almost ten percent in five years.
Researchers make breakthrough toward fish-free aquaculture feed

Dartmouth College scientists have discovered that marine microalgae can replace the wild fish oil currently used to feed tilapia. \"Our study shows that Schizochytrium is a high quality candidate for complete substitution of fish oil in juvenile Nile tilapia feeds, providing an innovative means to formulate and optimize the composition of feed while simultaneously raising feed efficiency of tilapia aquaculture.\"
