The global aquaculture community is mourning the passing of Dean Akiyama on October 13, a pioneering figure whose vision, humility, and scientific rigor helped shape the evolution of modern shrimp aquaculture. His lifelong dedication to advancing the industry inspired generations of professionals around the world.

Born and raised in Hawaii, Akiyama earned his Ph.D. in shrimp nutrition at Texas A&M University, where he laid the foundation for a career that would span continents and influence countless lives.

Akiyama began his professional journey as the original aquaculture technical representative for the American Soybean Association (ASA) in Singapore, where he became a prolific source of technical knowledge for the global shrimp industry. His newsletters, reports, workshops, and participation in international events helped disseminate critical research and practical innovations in aquaculture.

He later moved to Indonesia, where he played a transformative role in the development of large-scale shrimp production. At JAPFA Comfeed and later Central Proteina Prima (CPP), Akiyama led a range of aquaculture programs. During his 15 years at CPP, one of the world’s largest integrated aquaculture groups with annual shrimp production peaking at 90,000 metric tons, he directed and managed research and technology initiatives covering aquafeeds, animal health, R&D, quality assurance, and genetics. He also oversaw advancements at Shrimp Improvement Systems, a CPP subsidiary that became one of the world’s leading shrimp breeding companies.

Known for embodying the Aloha spirit of kindness, generosity, and respect, Akiyama left a profound personal impact on those who worked with him. In recent days, colleagues and friends from around the world have shared photos, testimonials, and memories online celebrating his warmth, mentorship, and legacy.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the industry, Dean Akiyama was recently honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the third annual TCRS Shrimp Summit in Bali.

His passing marks the loss of a true pioneer, but his influence will continue to shape global aquaculture for years to come.
