FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department receives 'Special Achievement in GIS' Award

The FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department, in recognition of its vision, leadership and innovation in geographic information system (GIS) technology, received a 'Special Achievement in GIS' Award from ESRI (a GIS software developer). The FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department was selected from more than 300,000 organizations worldwide and honoured for making extraordinary contributions to global society.

FAO's GISFish site was singled out for its aim to improve the sustainability of aquaculture and inland fisheries through easy access to comprehensive information on applications and training opportunities. Although there are many opportunities to use GIS, remote sensing and mapping to improve the sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture, the widespread use of these tools is impeded by limited awareness of their benefits and lack of access to experiences on how they can be deployed. GISFish was created to overcome these impediments.
