Guangdong Provincial Oceanic and Fishery Bureau and the Oceanic Institute, Hawaii, signed a cooperation agreement in Guangzhou. The Institute will work with Sichuan Tongwei Company and other enterprises in the province to implement Penaeus vannamei breeding technology transfer projects, local news sources said.
The project will help the province to gradually produce inexpensive high-quality domestic shrimp and reduce dependence on imported shrimp broodstock for farmers. The establishment of a vannamei breeding center will raise the province's vannamei breeding technology to a new level.
Guangdong is China's leading province for the production of Penaeus vannamei: in 2009 an area of 90,000 hectares produced 430,000 tons, valued at 80 billion yuan, China's Fishfirst website states.
