Jan Nicolai has been nominated member of the Round Table on Responsible Soy (RTRS), a world-wide platform for dialogue between soy producers, key stakeholders and companies.

FEFAC said in a press release that it is extremely pleased over the nomination of Nicolai, highlighting the importance of the RTRS, whose objectives are to strive for responsible soy farming through the improvement of the social and work conditions, the attention paid to environmental and economic concerns (forest management and sustainable soil usage).

Nicolai is Quality Manager of Nutreco. His candidature has been proposed by NEVEDI, FEFAC's Dutch member association, member of the Dutch Task Force sustainable soy, and was supported by FEFAC.

Prof. Martin Tielen, FEFAC President, stressed the importance of this nomination for the European Feed Industry and stated: "I’m convinced that Jan Nicolai has the experience in global sourcing of soybean meal to ensure that the voice of the European Feed Industry be taken into account to reach the targets set by RTRS".

The 1st RTRS General Assembly was held last week in Sao Paulo and defined a working programme based on 9 principles to develop responsible soy production. The European Union imports app. 40 million tonnes of soybean and soybean meal a year.

FEFAC, the European Compound Feed Manufacturers’ Federation, represents 21 national Associations in 20 EU Member States as well as Associations in Switzerland, Turkey and Norway with observer/associate member status. The European compound feed industry employs over 100,000 persons on app. 4,000 production sites often in rural areas, which offer few employment opportunities.

Farm animals in the EU consume an estimated 460 million tonnes of feed a year, of which 145 million tonnes are produced by the compound feed manufacturers. Turnover of the European compound feed industry is estimated at € 35 billion.
