Malta has taken a major step toward advancing research in its maritime sectors with the signing of an agreement to establish the country’s first dedicated centre for fisheries and aquaculture research.

Minister for Culture, Lands and Local Government Owen Bonnici and Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights Alicia Bugeja Said presided over the signing of the agreement between the Lands Authority and the Aquatic Resources Malta Agency.

The agreement involves the transfer of public property currently managed by the Lands Authority to the Aquatic Resources Malta Agency. This property will serve as the site for the new research centre, which aims to enhance Malta’s capacity for international-level research in aquaculture and fisheries using state-of-the-art tools and expertise.

As part of the agreement, Fort St. Lucian in Marsaxlokk will officially fall under the agency’s management and will continue its ongoing work related to aquaculture and fisheries research. The agency has already undertaken renovations at the fort and will lead the development of the new centre.

Minister Owen Bonnici said the project aligns with the government's strategy to use public land for national development and economic growth. “This transfer supports areas our country is investing in, boosting local research capacity and creating quality employment opportunities,” he said in a press release.

Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said emphasized the government’s commitment to sustainable development in maritime industries. “The creation of a national research centre reflects Malta’s vision for innovation and sustainability in aquaculture and fisheries. It will drive economic growth, support local talent, and position Malta as a Mediterranean leader in this field,” she said.

The Aquatic Resources Malta Agency, established in 2024 under the leadership of Chief Executive Dr. Frank Fabri, focuses on research and innovation in support of the local fisheries and aquaculture sectors. The new centre is expected to align with Malta’s Vision 2050 strategy and elevate the country’s role in sustainable marine resource management.
