The Kerala State Co-operative Federation for Fisheries Development, known as Matsyafed, has just opened a new fishmeal plant in Arattupuzha, capable of producing 80 metric tons per day.

The plant was opened by Fisheries Minister K Babu and Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala.

According to Matsyafed chairman V Dinakaran, the plant is a solution for the present practice of drying fish in unhygienic conditions on open beaches, which leads to environment pollution.

The organisation is also opening a new Aqua tourism centre.
