Salmofood, a Vitapro brand, has reached a significant milestone in sustainability by earning ASC Feed certification for its production facility in Castro, Chiloé Island, Los Lagos Region.

The ASC Feed certification covers critical indicators such as greenhouse gas emissions management, energy efficiency, renewable energy use, waste management, water conservation, and the protection of human and labor rights. Additionally, it mandates responsible sourcing practices, emphasizing supply chains free from deforestation and land conversion, as well as sustainable management of marine resources.

“ASC Feed is not just about the feed producer; it requires a holistic commitment that extends to raw material suppliers, ensuring they source responsibly and do not contribute to deforestation or depletion of marine resources,” said Jorge Ríos, country manager for Chile and chair of the Global Aquaculture Team at Control Union, the certifying body.

Francisco Valdés, Vitapro Chile’s business manager, said that “this achievement reinforces our commitment to leading practices that protect the environment and promote the well-being of communities and natural resources. ASC Feed certification is not just a milestone for us but a testament to our long-term dedication to sustainability.”

Ramiro Larios, country manager of Vitapro Chile, emphasized the certification’s significant impact on the salmon industry, which exports to markets with high standards for quality and sustainability. “This accomplishment not only strengthens our value proposition but also enables us to support our clients in their sustainability journey,” he remarked.

Looking ahead, Larios outlined the company’s plans to pursue additional certifications that enhance value for both the business and its clients while expanding its network of suppliers meeting these high standards to secure sustainable sourcing for the future.

José Luis Trejos, head of the Management and Quality Systems Department at Vitapro Chile, emphasized that the ASC Feed certification reflects years of effort to strengthen sustainable sourcing practices. “We have conducted thorough risk analyses and detailed evaluations of our suppliers from legal, social, and environmental perspectives, ensuring compliance with the stringent requirements of the standard,” he explained.

The certification, valid for three years and requiring annual audits, adds to a robust portfolio of recognitions, including GLOBAL G.A.P., Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP), RTRS Chain of Custody (Round Table on Responsible Soy), and Huella Chile, among others.

Salmofood feed mill joins a list of 12 feed mills that already achieved ASC Feed certification.
