Salmofood, a Vitapro brand, launched VITA, its new product line for the freshwater stages, on Thursday, May 29. This completes its product portfolio for all phases of salmonid farming. With this, the company aims to meet its clients' needs and offer high-quality feeds that help improve fish health and robustness from early stages, contributing to facing sanitary challenges at sea.
The presentation of the VITA line took place at the Cabaña del Lago hotel in Puerto Varas, and was attended by clients, executives, and professionals from the health, production, and quality areas of salmonid-producing companies.
After consolidating its know-how in seawater stages and organic farming, Salmofood decided to re-enter the freshwater segment. Thus, in 2024, after forming a team of experts and collaborating with strategic partners, it developed a project that included trials at its Aquaculture Experimental Center (CEA) and field tests in production facilities. The results showed that the new diets offer better digestibility, higher yield, lower conversion factor, and better growth. Additionally, they generate less waste and maintain low water turbidity, which improves cultivation conditions.
The company is now launching this new portfolio. To offer an efficient nutritional strategy that adapts to current needs, the first-feeding diets come from Alltech Coppens, with which a solid alliance was established for the benefit of clients. Diets for salmonids over 30 grams, meanwhile, are self-manufactured at Salmofood's plant located in Castro, Chiloé Island.
Thus, the new feed portfolio includes diets for different development stages, starting from less than 0.2 grams up to more than 100 grams, with specific products for each phase and type of fish farming (RAS and flow-through).
Comprehensive nutrition scheme
During the activity, Salmofood's Freshwater Key Account Manager, Verónica Morel, explained the technical scope of the proposal, reaffirming that this feed line responds to effectively listening to the industry's needs. She recalled that nutrition is fundamental in the early stages of cultivation, as it directly impacts the neurological and physiological development of the organism, lays the groundwork for a robust immune system, and determines long-term results in fish productive performance.
"In the development of our diets, we have placed special emphasis on the comprehensive care of the culture, optimizing water quality parameters, reducing waste and environmental load, and improving feed conversion factors. Our strategy also seeks to maximize the potential of each client's facilities, optimizing the feed to achieve the best possible performance, ensuring compatibility with automated feeding systems, reducing maintenance derived from fines and broken particles, and guaranteeing a uniform distribution of nutrients that ensures consistency in growth," she stated.
Representatives from Alltech Coppens, Cees-Jan Van Der Leek, Business Development Manager, and Xander de Boer, Technical Sales Support, also participated in the launch, addressing the importance of nutrition in the early stages of salmonid development.
Francisco Valdés, Salmofood's Business Manager, highlighted that with this launch, the company reaffirms its commitment to salmon farming. "Our goal is for each farm to achieve its maximum performance sustainably. The presented diets are the result of a collaborative effort that combines our knowledge in premium feed manufacturing and research with the real needs expressed by producers," he said.
He also shared a new challenge the company is undertaking. "As a company, we want to go a step further in the development of the freshwater area. We recognize that available research and information are not always sufficient to promote improvements that drive solid and constant growth in the industry. That's why we have decided to organize an event designed for you. It is a very comprehensive summit, focused on freshwater, that will integrate science, industry, and innovation, whose first version will take place in November 2025, with an agenda that will include prominent national and international speakers. We are convinced that this combination of innovative products and excellent service will make a significant difference in your productive results," the executive concluded.
