Fisheries Management: Status and Challenges

Keynote speech, Fisheries Management: Status and Challenges, given by Ichiro Nomura, Assistant Director-General, FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department at the Fifth World Fisheries Congress on 21 October 2008 at Pacifico Yokahama, Yokohama, Japan.

With fish providing at least 20% of animal protein intake for at least 1.5 billion people worldwide, it is critical that fisheries management is both efficient and effective. The idea of inexhaustable fisheries must be replaced by the recognition that access to fisheries must be restricted if they are to sustainably generate wealth and to alleviate poverty.
