Functional feed additives to prevent disease in farmed shrimp

AQUAFEED::ADVANCES IN PROCESSING & FORMULATION from Aquafeed.com Vol. 7 Issue 4 By Peter Coutteau, PhD, Manager Business Unit Aquaculture, Nutriad, Belgium.
December 10, 2015

Shrimp are the most valuable farmed aqua species worldwide, estimated at US$21 billion  production value in 2013 by FAO, and exceeding by far farmed salmon. Farming of marine penaeid shrimp boomed from a mere 100 MT in the 80s to close to 4 million Mt in 2010, with top five producers being China, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Ecuador. The shrimp farming sector is highly fragmented over many countries and farming methods lack standardiza-tion. Therefore it is a complex market for the supplying industry to bring innova-tion. This requires a highly specialized knowledge of the sector and laborious demonstration and adaptation of applications to local farming conditions.
