ADM has announced the realignment of its business segments across four units – Carbohydrate Solutions, Nutrition, Oilseeds and Origination. ADM and Cargill have reached an agreement to launch a joint venture to provide soybean meal and oil for customers in Egypt. The joint venture would own and operate the National Vegetable Oil Company soy crush facility in Borg Al-Arab along with related commercial and functional activities, including a separate Switzerland-based merchandising operation that would supply soybeans to the crush plant. Cargill is currently expanding the plant from 3,000 metric tons to 6,000 metric tons of daily crush capacity. “The joint venture brings together Cargill and ADM’s operational and commercial expertise to meet growing local demand for higher-quality feed ingredients."

Nutriad has released the results of its 2017 Mycotoxin Survey of Spanish maize. More than 480 analyses were conducted on 121 maize samples from across Spain to test for the occurrence of the 4 mycotoxins most frequently found in agricultural commodities intended for animal production. The results showed that almost 47% and 44% of the maize samples were contaminated with FUM and DON, respectively. Only 5,8% of the samples contained AfB1 and this low incidence of contamination was unexpected. Several samples were concurrently contaminated with 2 to 4 mycotoxins which may lead to synergistic interactions among them.

Leroy-Somer, part of the Nidec group, has announced that its Dyneo® permanent magnet motor can save a fish feed producer at least 135,000 kWh per year. Aller Aqua recently replaced a damaged DC motor on its principal extruder with a Dyneo® permanent magnet motor, providing the company with significant annual savings in energy costs. “Beyond energy performance, Aller Aqua is now able to benefit from significant savings in maintenance costs, allied to increased machine availability. The previous DC motor featured a brush and collector system, which comprised wear parts.”

Enterra Feed Corporation has received new approvals to sell its insect-based feed ingredients in the United States, Canada and the European Union. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) in the United States has agreed to Enterra’s request to include Black Soldier Fly Larvae Meal in feed for salmonids, which includes salmon, trout and arctic char, in their list of authorized feed ingredients. The supporting material and the change in the definition was reviewed and supported by FDA. “This is the first time an insect meal product has been approved in North America for the aquaculture industry and we’re excited to be the first to market.”

Nutriad has announced the appointment of Dr. Waldo Nuez Ortin as Lead Scientist of Aquaculture. Dr. Nuez has more than 10 years of academic and industry experience in aquaculture research and project management, including the evaluation and development of novel feed ingredients and additives. “I am excited to join the Nutriad team and hope to contribute to with my academic and practical knowledge of aquaculture research, biotechnological tools and experimental design to support the high need for innovation in aquaculture specialty additives."

This week, ADM Animal Nutrition announced the appointment of Samson Li as president of the company, as well as the release of a new protein ingredient for aquatic feeds called PROPLEX® T. Composed of dried fermentation biomass, PROPLEX T provides a consistent source of digestible protein and high levels of essential amino acids for aquaculture diets. "PROPLEX T provides feed manufacturers with added flexibility in formulations due to its high protein content and favorable amino acid profile.”

KnipBio, Inc. announced that it has successfully developed a line of KnipBio Meal that contains bio-astaxanthin. \"We have now developed a proprietary biological pathway that allows our microbe to produce astaxanthin in concentrations that make it effective for salmon and other species at inclusion rates of 5% or less of a formulated feed. This is great news for salmon, trout, and shrimp farmers looking for an affordable and natural alternative to synthetic astaxanthin. It’s also great news for consumers, as our research shows they prefer food products made from natural ingredients.”

Calysta has announced that FeedKind® protein has been approved for use as an ingredient in organic systems for animal feed in the United Kingdom and EU by Organic Farmers & Growers (OF&G). “Certification of FeedKind protein as an approved ingredient in organic animal feed is a significant milestone. This supports Calysta’s commitment to traceability and a reduced environmental footprint in the aquaculture feed supply chain.”

InnovaFeed has secured €15 million through funding with AlterEquity3P, Finovam Gestion, Nord Création (Group IRD), Nord France Amorçage (advised by Siparex) and several entrepreneurs. Following the launch of its first industrial production site in mid-2017, this new financing round will enable InnovaFeed to deploy a second production unit ten times larger, accelerate product commercialization and contribute to the growth of a sustainable food industry.

Evonik has released its ‘Europe Raw Material Crop Report 2017.' Using analyses from 5,725 samples of common European crop varieties collected from across 16 countries, the compilation contains the key data on crops from across the continent. “For composing a well-balanced feed it is crucial to know the exact protein content of every single raw material. As these protein contents can vary wildly from year-to-year, especially on a more localized, regional basis, our annual reports help provide the industry with this valuable insight and data."

Nutriad recently held an aquaculture seminar with a group of industry professionals in Yangon, Myanmar. Nutriad managers and representatives from Tan Sao A Co., Ltd. and the Myanmar Shrimp Association led presentations on global aquaculture outlook and shrimp farming practices in Thailand, Vietnam, and Myanmar. “This is the most successful aquaculture seminar in Myanmar, as it offers very practical and useful insights.
