Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) and Qingdao Vland Biotech Group Co., Ltd. announced a joint agreement for the development and commercialization of enzymes for animal feed applications. In addition to ADM’s research center in Decatur, Illinois, ADM will open a new U.S. enzyme research and development lab in California that will directly support activities being undertaken in the joint development agreement. Vland will also conduct research and development in its Qingdao research laboratory.

KnipBio announced it has completed a critical development step with the successful production of KnipBio Meal single cell protein in a 20,000 liter fermentation vessel. "Successfully moving from 1,500-liter to 20,000-liter production is a critical pre-commercialization step and offers solid proof that our fermentation process is highly scalable. To be successful in the aquaculture protein market we must be price-competitive with fishmeal and soy protein, so I was impressed that we managed to reduce production costs by more than 15x with this scale-up. Our next manufacturing goal is achieving full commercial-scale production."

ADM Animal Nutrition has announced the appointment of Dr. John Bowzer as lead research scientist in aquaculture. Bowzer is tasked with strengthening ADM’s commitment to developing ingredients and products that deliver value to the rapidly growing aquaculture industry. In addition, he leads ADM’s efforts to expand its research capabilities through development of an aquaculture wet lab.

Estensoro et al. (2016) evaluated the effects of adding Norel's GUSTOR BP70 to alleviate some negative effects of extreme plant-ingredient substitution of fish meal and fish oil in a gilthead sea bream diet. Results confirm the potential of GUSTOR BP70 to improve or reverse the detrimental effects of extreme fish diet formulas.

AquaBiotech Group has been working together with various partners to increase and improve aquaculture resources across the globe. The company recently won the Bluebridge Competition for VRES to study the nutrition dispersion and retention in the environment surrounding a local fish farm as a part of the H2020 project TAPAS. Under another project, AquaBiotech are carrying out work to promote commercial aquaculture in Uganda. The AquaBioTech Group also recently completed the development of the Alltech Coppens Aqua Centre (ACAC) in Valkenswaard, the Netherlands.

The Grand Opening Ceremony of the first Olmix factory in Asia was held on October 10th, 2017 in Vietnam. The factory will provide approximately 15,000 tons of animal feed additives and nutraceuticals for feed mills and farms per year. Starting its production from November 1st 2017, the factory will be focused on producing new feed additives to be provided to the Asian market, such as mShell (shell and bones quality enhancer) and ASEAD (range of innovative acidifiers).

Results from samples submitted for the Alltech 2017 Canadian Harvest Analysis show that grains and forages from across Canada are at risk of mycotoxin contamination. Samples submitted between Sept. 1 and Oct. 15, 2017, show that grains contained mixtures of mycotoxins, including deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZEA). Forages such as corn silage, barlage and haylage samples also contained multiple mycotoxins in 2017, particularly from mycotoxins produced by Fusarium species of molds, such as DON, ZEA and T-2/HT-2 toxins.

Calysta and two European partners have been awarded the 2017 IChemE Global Team Award for excellence at Calysta’s UK production facility in Teesside. The plant uses Calysta’s innovative gas-phase fermentation process to produce FeedKind® protein. “We want to congratulate the entire team at all three organizations for this significant honor. Thanks to excellent engineering collaboration from the project team, the plant was delivered against a fast-tracked construction program with zero injuries. Samples have been distributed worldwide for feeding trials, marking a significant step towards engineering a sustainable food source for the growing global population.”

NovoNutrients,  Sunnyvale, California, which is using food-grade bacteria to make fish food from industrial carbon emissions, took home the prize in the Supply Chain Innovation category.

KnipBio, Inc. today announced it has entered into an agreement with Ghent University to license the Belgian university’s research on the use of prebiotics to promote health in the aquaculture and agriculture industries.

Alltech now has the ability to test for over 40 different mycotoxins in animal feed samples. The Alltech Coppens Aqua Centre officially opened its doors following extensive refurbishment, and released a new video highlighting the changes to the facility. The innovation centre will be a leading international aquatic research facility focused on excellence in feed solutions for aqua producers around the world. "What you have here is the hybrid of a farm and a research center so all of the research being done in this facility is being done with the single goal of improving commercial feeds."

Nutriad hosted a customer event titled “Functional feed additives in aquaculture: How to add more?” at the recent European Aquaculture Society conference in Dubrovnik. “This seminar was aimed at sharing information with our European aquaculture customers, with a specific emphasis on the Mediterranean producers of marine fish. The audience represented well over 50% of the marine fish production in the Mediterranean region, covered either as farmer or feed supplier.”

Mycotoxin-related threats to livestock production continue to pose a challenge to the feed and animal sectors in most regions of the world in 2017, according to the latest BIOMIN Mycotoxin Survey report. This conclusion emerged from more than 51197 analyses conducted on 13153 finished feed and raw commodity samples sourced from 69 countries from January to September 2017. While, corn (maize) and its by-products are commonly contaminated by mycotoxins, other feed ingredients such as soybeans appear to have a heightened risk of contamination. 

Alltech has announced that registration for participation in the 2018 Alltech Young Scientist (AYS) program has been extended to December 31, 2017. Undergraduate and graduate applicants will compete first within their home regions, and regional finalists will be invited to attend an all-expense-paid Alltech Young Scientist Discovery Week, where they will compete in the global competition. “Lifelong learning is a core value within Alltech, and we are proud to invest in young, bright minds through our Alltech Young Scientist program. Archer Daniels Midland Company has officially opened its new feed premix plant in Zhangzhou, South China. Built with an annual production capacity of 30,000 metric tons of feed premixes and 80,000 metric tons of complete feed and concentrates, the Zhangzhou feed plant represents the fourth in ADM’s expanding animal nutrition network in China. “With operations in Zhangzhou, we are better equipped to serve our customers in the southern part of the country.”
