Global oilseed production for 2011/12 is projected at 454.8 million tons, up 1.3 million tons from last month. Global soybean production accounts for a quarter of the increase with larger crops projected for Brazil, Paraguay, and Mexico. Brazil soybean production is increased 1.5 million tons to 75 million with improved yield prospects related to rapid planting progress and good early season moisture throughout the country. These gains are partly offset by lower production projected for Argentina, which is reduced 1 million tons to 52 million due to reduced area as producers shift to corn

The heavy dependence of capture-based aquaculture (CBA) on wild resources and its implications for wild populations have been increasingly recognized in the last decade. These guidelines address the actual and potential impacts of wild-seed harvest on target and non-target (bycatch) species (including threatened species), on biodiversity, and on the environment and marine ecosystem. The guidelines also consider harvest and post-collection practices, grow-out, feed and broodstock, social and economic factors, and governance considerations. They also identify CBA principles and guidelines for good practices, and provide numerous illustrative case studies from a diverse range of species and fisheries

The scientific secretariat staff in the BIOHAZ, FEED, GMO, Pesticides and BIOMO Units have collaborated in drafting a technical report covering the following topics: (i) Mapping of the activities carried out in all the relevant areas of antimicrobial resistance in EFSA; (ii) Identification of purposes of use for commensal microorganisms in specific areas under the remit of EFSA. Review of the legislative background within these areas; (iii) definition of the taxonomic unit of commensal microorganisms (genus, species and strains) where EFSA has already conducted risk assessments; (iv) Definition (type, and interpretative criteria) of antimicrobial resistance in these commensal microorganisms; and (v) summary of the main considerations on horizontal transfer of antimicrobial resistance, and review of the approaches undertaken in the different EFSA units/panels to carry out antimicrobial risk assessments for these microorganisms

The Catfish 2010 study represents the third study of the catfish industry conducted by the National Animal Health Monitoring System. Catfish 2010 takes a broad look at management, production, and health practices across the various facets of the catfish industry, including breeding, hatching, and foodsize-fish growout. The study builds upon knowledge obtained from previous studies and examines new topics important to the industry. This report focuses on the foodsize-fish production segment of the catfish industry.
